Product Description
As the daughter of Viscount Aynsley, Caroline Hatherleigh knows every rule of society—and she’s always followed them precisely. It’s simply the way things are done in her world. When she visits south Devonshire and encounters a fossil-hunting scientist and his sister, her assumptions about what is right are shaken. She is suddenly confronted by questions she has never considered about the importance of friendship and faith—and her comfortable understanding about how the world works is thrown off balance.
Gideon Kirby loves science, and hunting down proof of past lives is a joy he won’t willingly give up. But his scientific leanings are being challenged by both his personal beliefs and by local smugglers in the Devonshire countryside. And every day his sister’s illness is becoming more desperate and her care grows more demanding. Adding a proper Viscount’s daughter to the mix is a complication Gideon never expected—especially since he has a secret that demands he stays far away from this young woman he’s falling for in order to protect his beloved sister.
When a mysterious stranger visits the village, that secret is set to be exposed, no matter how Gideon fights. Then tragedy strikes in a smugglers cave. And the threat of scandal may lead to broken hearts and passionless propriety. Will the shaky bond these two have managed to build be strong enough to overcome their differences—or will the trust they’ve withheld from each other end up tearing three lives apart?
My Thoughts: 💭
This book started at an easy pace but once it picked up speed it was hard to put down!
While learning about fossils I grew to love the characters and the sibling love between Gideon, my fave, and his sister.
I will say there is a bit of violence or mistreatment towards a pregnant woman that made me cringed as I grabbed my abdomen, lol. Things like this happen in real life but it isn’t something I tend to read about. I felt her pain although I didn’t sympathize with all of her thoughts. But pregnant women are entitled to their emotions fueled by extra hormones :). She wasn’t the main character but I adored her as well.
Caroline, is finding herself in this world. She is stong willed, short tempered, the less fairer of the three Ansley sisters, and reminds me a bit of myself 😁. With a tad of humor that author Carolyn includes, this romance, with its complications of society differences and plenty of surprises, makes a great regency read.
This is the first of Daughters of Aynsley series, book two just released this month. I got a preview of the first chapter and it drew me in, I can’t wait to read it!
One lucky commentator will win my copy of the book! I’ll announce a winner on July 25th. 💕
Thank you for the warning about the violent part of the book. I am also quite sensitive with such content and would have been quite troubled to read it.
Thanks again for the helpful review! I hope that all is well with you and your loved ones. 🙂

Thank you for stopping by ☺. It was only one scene but took me aback.
I enjoy suspense novels and have read gruesome ones and am OK, except when it involves children.
This may be the second one this year with a pregnant woman. The other one was by a main stream author set in the WWI era with spies. I was kind of mentally prepared with the first one because war books often have difficult scenarios.
I’m doing well and hope you are too 💕.

I can only imagine how heart-wrenching it must have been to come across that scene in your literary travels! Thankfully, it sounds like the story ends on a more uplifting note, which is encouraging to hear.
Yes, I am well! For some reason, I seem to have an ever-expanding list of books to read… 😉
